Police charge landlord to court for removing tenant’s roof

The Lagos state police on Tuesday, arraigned a 51-year-old landlord, Abolaji Ismahil before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly removing the roof of his tenant’s apartment.

The Prosecution Counsel , Insp Courage Ekhueorohan, told the court that Ismahil and some others, at large removed ten zinc roofing sheet over the apartment of the complainant, Lawal Ismail on Dec.13, 2023.

He said the incident happened at No 40, Kekereowo St., Itire, Surulere, Lagos, and after the removal, the landlord allegedly destroyed the roofing material after several attempts to get the complainant to pay his rent.

The defendant, who lives in Mushin area of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy, breach of public peace and theft.

But the police proscutor submitted that the complainant also reported that his HP Laptops, a gold chain, and two wristwatches were stolen from his apartment.

According to Ekhueorohan, the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 168, 287 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mr Ganiyu Tiamiyu, admitted Ismahil to bail in the sum of N100,000, with two responsible sureties in like sum.

He ordered that the sureties must have their addresses verified by the court and adjourned the case until March 13, for mention.
