Atlético Madrid host Manchester United in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday night with Diego Simeone’s Liga champion currently outside the domestic qualification spots while United are back in the knock-out stages of Europe’s elite cup competition for the first time since 2018-19.
Neither side has been playing the sort of football they have become synonymous with – Atlético dogged defensively and United sparkling in attack – with Simeone attempting to impose a different style on his team of late and the Premier League side in a state of transition under interim boss Ralf Rangnick.
All eyes will of course be on Cristiano Ronaldo, the competition’s all-time leading scorer and five-times Champions League winner, who while not bought specifically for European success as was the case at Juventus, will certainly be expected to lift United as far as possible in this season’s campaign.
The Portuguese has played against Atleti more times than any other club during his career, scoring 25 goals in 35 games with a win-loss record of 17-9 and nine draws.
